Osteoporosis is a serious disease that too often remains undiagnosed and untreated.  Of the 5.1 million women age 65 and older with osteoporosis in the U.S., it is estimated that nearly 72% received neither a bone mineral density test nor treatment in 2001.  According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, 1.5 million fractures are associated with osteoporosis each year.  As the consequences of this disease place an increased burden on the healthcare system, it is likely that more and more women will be directed to seek early diagnosis and treatment.  Prevention and treatment of osteoporosis include synthetic estrogen or progestin therapy or both for postmenopausal women, intake of calcium and other nutrients, weight-bearing exercise, and drugs such as calcitonin and alendronate sodium, a non-hormonal treatment for osteoporosis.
