Studies show that quitting for good can take many attempts, with each attempt bringing the smoker closer to success.
The Oregon Tobacco Quit Line can help. The Quit Line was developed to provide Oregon residents with cessation assistance and resource information. While the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) guidelines state that even brief cessation interventions are effective, some smokers require more intensive treatment. Quit Line staff are skilled in working with all forms of tobacco, pipes and cigars. Trained cessation specialists provide customized quitting plans, skills training, problem-solving, and support, and will focus on relapse prevention for those who have already quit. The Quit Line can help:
· Tobacco users, in all stages of readiness. · Teen smokers. · Pregnant smokers. · Smokeless tobacco users. · Former smokers who would like relapse prevention support. · Healthcare providers who require resource information for their patients. · Friends and relatives of smokers. · The uninsured, by providing them with a comprehensive quitting program.
Call : 1-877-270-STOP (1-877-270-7867)
Quit Line Hours: Monday to Thursday: 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday: 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday: 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Messages will be returned within one business day. How the Quit Line works: Telephone interventions increase accessibility - callers can speak to an experienced cessation specialist when it’s convenient for them and regardless of their mobility or location. They receive the individual support they need - whether they have questions or concerns about quitting, need assistance to plan for their quit attempt, or want to know how to support someone who is trying to quit. When individualized cessation counseling is coupled with quitting materials, studies have shown that quit rates are increased by over 50% when compared to controls.
Quit kit materials are customized according to the needs of the caller, and can include stage-ready cessation guides, information on the use of adjunct pharmacological therapies (such as Zyban and nicotine replacement therapy), a guide on how to support someone who is in the process of quitting, and information on smokeless tobacco, pregnant smokers, and /or teen cessation.
The Quit Line offers a free assessment of your readiness to quit, telephone intervention, quitting materials, and referral to other cessation resources.
Services are available in both English and Spanish.
