The flu shot is an inactivated vaccine (containing killed virus). It contains three vaccine strains representative of the flu vaccine strains recommended for that year. Viruses for the flu shot are grown in eggs.
Who should get a flu shot?
In general, anyone who wants to reduce their chances of getting the flu can get vaccinated. Certain people however, should get vaccinated every year. People who are at high risk of developing serious complications resulting from the flu, and people who care for those that are at high risk. During the flu season when vaccine supplies are limited or delayed, CDC must make recommendations regarding priority groups for vaccination.
Priority Groups include:
· People 65 years of age and older , with and without chronic health conditions · Residents of long-term care facilities · People aged 2-64 with chronic health conditions · Children aged 6-23 months · Pregnant women · Health care personnel who provide direct patient care · Household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children less than 6 months old.
What are the side-effects of the flu shot?
· Soreness, redness, or swelling where the shot was given. · Fever (low grade) · Body aches
If these problems occur, they begin soon after the shot and usually last one to two days.
Who should NOT get a flu shot?
If you have ever had a sever allergic reaction to eggs or to a previous flu shot, or have a history of Guillain-Barre’ syndrome (GBS).
What are the risks from getting a flu shot?
The viruses in the flu shot are inactivated, so you cannot get the flu from a flu shot. The risk of a flu shot causing serious harm, or death, is extremely small. However, a vaccine, like any medicine, may rarely cause serious problems, such as severe allergic reactions. Most of the people who get the flu shot have no serious problems with it.
Where to go to get your flu shot?
Flu shots usually become available around September or October. For best results you should try to get your flu shot at one of the many flu shot clinics that are held in Tillamook or Lincoln county. Watch the newspaper or listen to your local radio stations for more information on where those will be held. The health department in your county should be able to provide you with a flu shot as well. At this office we usually get our flu vaccine in and begin giving it to our high risk patients. Please call early for an appointment if you are interested in a flu shot and qualify as high risk. Currently flu shots are being given at:

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) has changed its flu recommendations for children. Beginning in flu season 2006-2007, all children between the ages of six months and five years should be vaccinated. This is an expansion of previous recommendations that children ages six to 23 months should be vaccinated.
Children ages five through 18 years who are household contacts of anyone under the age of five should also get a flu shot, according to the ACIP, as well as adults who are caregivers of a child under the age of five. |
