General Recommendations for Preventive Services

·          Adults should have their weight and blood pressure checked periodically.

·          Men and women over age 50 should be screened for colorectal cancer. Your doctor will talk to you about which screening tests for colorectal cancer you should have and how often you should be screened.  If you have risk factors that make you more likely to get colorectal cancer at a young age, you should begin screening earlier.

·          Your doctor will make sure that you get all the immunizations you need.  Factors such as your age, your lifestyle, your job and your health history help determine what immunizations you need.  For example, adults over age 50 and younger adults with certain health problems should talk to their doctor about getting a flu shot every year.

·          Your doctor will also talk to you about the importance of eating a healthy diet, being physically active, protecting yourself from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and avoiding tobacco, drugs and excessive alcohol use.
