A Diabetes Self-Management Education Program from

Samaritan Health Services offered at

Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital

and

Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital.

The “Managing Diabetes” program is a series of classes designed to help people recently diagnosed with diabetes as well as those who have had the disease for many years.  The program emphasizes diabetes self-management, which means taking charge of your diabetes by learning about healthy eating, exercise and activity, blood sugar monitoring and medications, among other topics.  It also means working with your health care team to pave the way for better health and independence in lifestyle choices.

These classes are small and informal, and allow for plenty of interaction between the participants and instructors, as well as your peers.  A registered nurse and a registered dietician lead the classes.  The classes are held over two days, each is 4.5 hours long, and cover all of the areas recommended by the American Diabetes Association for a comprehensive education program.

Some of the topics to be covered include:

·          Overview of diabetes-the types, causes, risk factors.

·          Management tools-diet, exercise, medications, monitoring.

·          Program Management-What do those numbers mean, and how do I improve them?

·          Diabetes and Stress

·          Complication of Diabetes, and how to prevent them

·          Follow up guidelines for ongoing care

·          Diabetes and Pregnancy

Medicare and most insurance plans cover the cost of classes, but please check with your health plan for questions.
